Deconstruction

For many years Door County Habitat for Humanity has received offers from local homeowners who are either remodeling or demolishing existing structures to make room for new construction. In the past, we have concentrated on those donations (cabinets, light fixtures and building materials) that could be used in new home construction. Most Habitat homes have been built with quality cabinets salvaged from other homes.

With the opening of the ReStore in 2009, we have expanded our horizons to include not only cabinets and light fixtures, but also windows, doors, flooring, appliances and furniture. We usually “cherry pick” and take only those items that have resale value or can be used in our construction projects. However, we have also been involved in more substantial “deconstruction” projects in which nearly the entire structure is demolished by our volunteers. These in-kind donations are eligible for a tax deduction and contribute in a very real way to Door County Habitat for Humanity. Good quality items are used in our homes, thereby reducing our construction costs. Donations which cannot be used are sold in the ReStore and represent a significant source of income for that operation.

Those interested in donating good quality new or used items rather than taking them to the land fill should contact the Door County Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 920-743-2868. People interested in assisting with deconstruction projects should call the same number.

We continue our deconstruction projects. An e-mail or phone call will be made to volunteers when a project becomes available. Typically deconstruction work will also be done on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but if necessary we will schedule deconstruction activities for other days of the week as well.
